Why bone

Most marine collagen comes from skin. This comes from the bone.

Nearly all marine collagen on the market is made from fish skin, which is mostly Type I. We start from the skeleton, which also carries Type II, the collagen type found in cartilage.

How it is made, at trial scale

From sidestream to scoop.

  1. 01

    SOURCED

Cod bones and frames from the Nordic fishing industry, material that would otherwise be discarded or sold cheap. Minced and cleaned.

  2. 02

    DISSOLVED

The bone matrix is gently dissolved, which frees the collagen.

  3. 03

    REFINED

Enzymes cut the collagen into small peptides, then filtration isolates the target size.

  4. 04

    STIRRED

Spray dried to a fine powder. One scoop, 10 g a day, in water, coffee or a smoothie. Designed to dissolve in cold water.

Wild-caught, Nordic

Sourced from the cold North Atlantic.

Cod is a wild-caught fish and its bones are what is left when the fillets are cut. We turn that sidestream into a collagen ingredient instead of waste.

Mermaid Proteins is a Danish start-up from DTU Skylab, founded by Bente van Vlijmen and Leopold von der Schulenburg, with Andreu Capell as CTO. We started by asking what the Nordic fishing industry leaves behind. The answer was cod bone, so that is what we make collagen from.

Mermaid Proteins is a brand of BlueLoop Protein ApS, Denmark, CVR 46220986.
